Always Have an Ask

I had a great time at Collision Conference in New Orleans earlier this week. As part of the conference, the organizers set up office hours with startups.

I'd ask each startup, "So, why are you here at the show?"

I was surprised at the large number who had zero objective for meeting with me or being at the conference in general.

"We're here to meet people" was a common refrain.

I think that's way off. Unless the idea is to attend a conference to have fun, you should have objectives for why you're there. Or, why you're meeting with someone. As they say, the first step in reaching your goal is to figure out what the goal is.
